CLIMBING WALL DESIGNER: JASON KEHL
Professional climber, route developer, hold shaper, guidebook author - and the creative mind behind Ascent’s boulder design.
Developing our climbing terrain was probably the most exciting, but also daunting task in setting up the gym. We wanted to work with a partner capable of technical design, but also someone who could blend decades of experience in route setting, hold shaping, and a passion for movement on natural stone.
Enter: Jason Kehl
After months of reviewing layouts from some of the best-known wall builders, we felt Jason’s concept provided the most interesting terrain and the best utilization of our space. His design allowed for maximum climbing square footage while preserving the unique natural light provided by our many windows and skylights. Jason was intentional about how climbers would interact with the walls and other climbers, leaving plenty of room for resting, spectating, and social spaces.
Our approach was to design simple, open panels that could be easily modified with macro holds and volumes to keep the terrain and movement feeling fresh with every re-set. But, It wouldn’t be a Jason Kehl design without a few of his signature, playful designs in the mix. Look for walls we affectionately call the “pineapple” and the “lobster tail” and another amazing feature loosely based on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics boulder.
We’re excited to share renderings of our layout and final wall designs with you very soon. Stay tuned! Meanwhile, here’s a peak at some of Jason’s previous climbing gym designs:
