GYM TO CRAG: BEST BOULDERING AREAS NEAR NEW HAVEN

Our last post covered outdoor climbing ethics and what to expect on your first trip outside. This time, we're rounding up our favorite bouldering areas near New Haven, Connecticut. We picked these four for solid rock, relatively flat landings, landowner-permitted access, and beginner-friendly approaches — all within a short drive of the city.

FRANKENROCK (WOODBRIDGE LAND TRUST)

New Haven's bread-and-butter crag. Frankenrock in Woodbridge, CT may be the most well-known boulder in the greater New Haven area, and for good reason.
This out-of-place traprock block holds some genuinely classic climbs, link-ups, and warm-ups, with something for every climber — whether you're bouldering outdoors for the first time or projecting your next V9. The landings are clean, the climbs are great, and the vibes are immaculate.
DIRECTIONS TO FRANKENROCK
Park on the side of the road near the Woodbridge Land Trust kiosk (around 53 Park Lane, Woodbridge, CT.) The trail entrance is on the other side of the road, to the right of the solar panel field and chain-link gate. Park responsibly — don't block the gate, and leave room for other hikers and climbers. Follow the trail for about 5 minutes and the boulder comes into view.

CHATFIELD HOLLOW STATE PARK

Chatfield Hollow State Park in Killingworth, CT is home to some of the best bouldering in Connecticut. From the tufas of the Weather Caves to the crimps of Broken Bridge to the underrated lines at Fat Man's Squeeze (closed seasonally June 1–September 1), there's something for everyone here — and some of the best rock quality you'll find in the state.
DIRECTIONS TO CHATFIELD HOLLOW
Approach and parking directions vary depending on which area you're headed to — Weather Caves, Broken Bridge, or Fat Man's Squeeze — so it's worth checking Mountain Project before you go. For Weather Caves and Broken Bridge areas, park at the main entrance to the park. For Fat Man’s Squeeze area, park at Deer Lake Outdoor Center.

SAMP MORTAR ROCK
Samp Mortar is a small bouldering crag in Fairfield, CT with plenty to offer despite its size. Most of the climbs are overhanging, with a challenging top-out waiting on nearly every problem. Between the link-ups and traverses, there's a lot of variety packed into a small footprint — making it a solid pick for a day trip outside New Haven.
DIRECTIONS TO SAMP MORTAR
The main boulder sits in Samp Mortar Rock Open Space in Fairfield, CT, accessible from either I-95 or the Merritt Parkway. Drive through a few neighborhoods to Springer Rd. Follow Springer Rd to the end, where you'll find the park entrance and "Samp Mortar Rock" kiosk shortly before the dead end.

CLASSIC BOULDERS AT SAMP MORTAR

Crimp Line on Main Roof - V7
Right Roof - V6
Mushroom Traverse Right - V5
Middle Roof (both variations) - V2 or V3
MANSFIELD GROVE BOULDER
While unassuming, Mansfield Grove is a great beginner bouldering spot near New Haven. The approach is short, the landing is flat, and the boulder stays low to the ground with climbs in the V0–V5 range — an ideal introduction to outdoor bouldering. Just bring plenty of finger tape: the holds here can feel a little sharp.
DIRECTIONS TO MANSFIELD GROVE
The boulder sits on the Greenway Trail in East Haven, just a couple hundred feet down the gravel path — easy to spot once you're on it. Park in the small gravel parking lot at the corner of Mansfield Grove Road and Hoop Pole Lane in East Haven, CT.
